On July 29, 1948, the day of the Opening Ceremony of the London 1948 Olympic Games, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann organized the first competition for wheelchair athletes which he named the Stoke Mandeville Games. The competition was for injured military service members. The Stoke Mandeville Games would lead to the eventual Paralympic Games, first known by that name in 1960.
