Mats Öhman – 550 koní, bez pedálů a volantu
Swedish rallycross driver Mats Ohman has formed a two-car team to contest the European Rallycross Championship this season.
Ohman will be joined by his nephew Emil in the two-car effort that will run Citroen DS3s.
“This year will be awesome,” said Ohman, who is a former European Snowcross champion.
“When the opportunity came along, it sounded like the right timing to take on the challenge of a big championship again.”
The Swede is paralysed from the waist down following a Snowcross crash in 1998, and uses hand controls in his rallycross machines.
Ohman’s best European rallycross result to date was at his home event in Holjes, Sweden in 2012, finishing sixth overall in a Volvo S40. He raced the car in three RallycrossRX events last season, and finished second in the Swedish championship.
The Ohman pair will start the season at Lydden Hill on May 24-25, in what will be Emil’s first rallycross event.
A double World Snowcross champion, Emil has worked as an engineer for his uncle’s rallycross team in recent years.
“It will be so much fun trying my wings in World RX,” said Emil. “I have followed Mats and know that the sport can be tough, but after my years in stadium cross it’s not the jumps I’m concerned about.
“Even if I’m used to hard driving in snowcross, rallycross is something new and I will have to adapt as well as I can, but I am sure it will be great fun and I can’t wait to get started.”
